Orlando Massage Parlors: Verdicts returned in suspected Russian sex ring operating in US

Officials said six were convicted on various federal charges including conspiracy, traveling in interstate and foreign commerce to promote a prostitution business and using facilities of interstate commerce to promote a prostitution business. The other five were acquitted.
Prosecutors said the women came to America to work as prostitutes. Some defense attorneys in the case, however, argued the prosecution would have been more appropriate as a misdemeanor prostitution case in state court.
The trial began in mid-October and took a significant amount of time as the defendants were tried together, each had their own attorney and several used translators. Prosecutors say the women worked out of massage parlors in Orlando, Tampa, Cincinnati, Boston and Atlanta.
During the trial, jurors saw video taken by investigators during their undercover operations at the so-called massage parlors.

Orlando Massage Parlors: Orange City Council limits zoning for ‘pill mills’

ORANGE CITY — Four members of the new City Council took their oaths Tuesday night, then took up one of the biggest problems facing Florida residents: the proliferation of illegal prescription drugs.
After a special meeting during which the gavel was transferred from outgoing Mayor Harley Strickland to the man who defeated him in last week’s election, Tom Laputka, the council approved on first reading an ordinance limiting so-called “pill mills” to industrially zoned parcels. The businesses, legal in Florida, advertise themselves as pain clinics, massage parlors, detox centers and urgent-care facilities.
Alison Stetner, the development services director, said prescription-drug abuse is “the No. 1 safety threat to Floridians today,” causing seven deaths every day. Pill mills have been banned from the city on a short-term moratorium that was ending.

Sex-trafficking trial under way in Florida

ORLANDO, Fla., Oct. 18 (UPI) — Alleged members of a European sex-trafficking ring are on trial in Orlando, Fla., on federal charges, including racketeering and conspiracy.
Prosecutors say the alleged ringleader, Roman Caraiman of Moldova, has fled the country, the Orlando Sentinel reported. Eleven other defendants, including Caraiman’s 25-year-old wife, Tatiana Belinschi, were in court Tuesday.
Caraiman and Alexandr Postica are accused of recruiting women from other countries to work as prostitutes at massage parlors in Florida, Ohio, Michigan and Massachusetts, the Sentinel said.
The sex ring allegedly operated out of three Florida counties — Orange, Osceola and Hillsborough — since at least July 2009, with a portion of the proceeds going to Caraiman, Belinschi and Postica.

Orlando Massage Parlors: Russian sex-trafficking suspects pack Orlando courtroom

Attorneys will take up other issues this afternoon, but the jury was sent home for the day.
The suspected ringleader, Roman Caraiman, is the only one of the 12 named in the 27-count indictment who will not be at trial — because he hasn’t been arrested.
Earlier this year, Caraiman told the Orlando Sentinel he fled the United States and was in Europe.
He left behind his baby and ex-wife, Tatiana Belinschi, who was one of the 11 defendants in the courtroom today.
It’s an unusually large trial for Orlando federal court — each defendant has an attorney, and Russian and Romanian translators are also in the courtroom. The trial is expected to last several weeks.
Federal prosecutors say Caraiman and Alexandr Postica recruited women to do sex work at massage parlors throughout the United States.

The first of those to appear was 25-year-old Tatiana Belinschi, who was recently indicted and arrested on charges ranging from racketeering to conspiracy to defraud the United States.
The 27-count indictment, unsealed this week, accuses Belinschi’s ex-husband, Roman Caraiman, and Alexandr Postica of recruiting women to work as sex workers at massage parlors around the United States.
Federal authorities said Caraiman imported people from Russia and sought to bring women from other countries to the United States, all to work in the sex trade.
None of those indicted by the grand jury are U.S. citizens. Belinschi is from the Republic of Moldova and told the court today she is seeking political asylum.

The state says its clear the judge already formed an opinion on the case before evidence was even presented.
I don’t think exposing a breast means somebody can touch it, that is still battery. Ansboro said about the case during a hearing in January. You might want to talk to your officer about how he wants to resolve this case because it sounds like, to me, you guys have a huge problem.
Ansboro said she would think about it and will later decide if she will be taking herself off the case.
